The End of Free Banking?

The EU wants to impose charges on the use of debit and credit cards (probably to bring Britain into line with the rest of Europe):

How do you feel about that?

Still got your cheque book

Or would you start paying cash again?

Or not mind the charges?

I already have to pay charges on certain things on line. When I buy a train ticket or a hotel they charge for certain cards. £2.
I would be annoyed if they charged me Can anyone remember donkey years ago when nobody told us what we had to do every 5 minutes. I
get fed up of hearing the new things that come at you daily. Give us
a break for G sake.

I think I would start using cash again, they stopped me using cheques and insisted debit cards were to be used, if they now charge I will simply stop using them.

There has been a tax on bank cards over here for years, I never use them but the last I heard it was 50 euros a year, probably more now. We also have the highest rate of VAT in Europe.
I never have any dealings with banks, I use cash and the post office for larger transactions. The wife uses the bank and is always complaining about it, but you pay your money and make your choice.

Yes I will mind the charges.
The bank already makes interest on my account because I am always in credit with sufficient cash in there to pay a months worth of bills and a have surplus ensuring I never go overdrawn.

I hardly ever use cheques and bank online transferring money electronically or by DD which costs the bank very little in terms of effort.

Re: The End of Free Banking?

I have 4 accounts with the NATWEST & I pay £20 pm for this service.
I have been with the same branch for nearly 50 years & am quite satisfied with them.

I couldnt go cash only, I'd spend it if I had it in my pocket

Re: The End of Free Banking?

We pay most of our bills online or by dd. But there are still a couple that we have to pay over the counter and get charged for it. I object to that. So if you are then going to be charged for using a debit card to pay for these bills online - big style will be annoyed.
