I think it is a woodworking vice and would have had wooden face plates on the insides like this one of mine, formerly my Dad's.
This one also has a quick release lever which saves a lot of winding.



My metalwork vice wot I scrounged from the workshop of the hostel I was living in until it closed. It is unusual in that it has a small "anvil" area on the back.

It also has a quick release lever.



Little and Large.
The small vice was also my Dad's.
The big one is a carver's vice I made from a set of plans I bought when I made a rocking horse for my eldest. It opens to about half a metre, but sadly it doesn't have a quick release lever.

I can be whatever you want me to be Tess. Actually, I have beautiful feet, nowhere near the quality of JBR's feet of course but they have won awards. No hairs on them though, sorry.
