An old Yew tree

This Yew tree in Peper Harow (spelling correct) near Shackleford, Surrey is reckoned to be about a thousand years old.

While out on the same walk, I noticed just how short of land we are in the congested south.

Beautiful tree, Mart.
If you think that's congested you should have a walk on Dartmoor. They were saying on the news there are too many people visiting it.

I read a Yew tree's trunk can split when it is about 600 years old but it doesn't mean it's at the end of its life ..as this one demonstrates. I wonder if it goes hollow before the split or afterwards?

Nature at it's best, wonderful.

There is a weeping willow tree right in the centre of the graveyard where my Mum is buried, I always think how appropriate, a weeping tree in such a sad place. I must remember to take a photo.

Re: An old Yew tree

There is a very old Yew tree at home in St Helen's churchyard in Derbyshire.
It claims to be 2000 years old and with a girth of around 33 feet is one of the thickest in England.

Many times I have looked at it and thought of the many things it has witnessed, battles, the plague and so many changes .

Lovely tree.
Where I used to live the villagers claimed they had the oldest yew in England in the churchyard, not sure if it was true though.
