He is willing to fight for his country not for a foreign country. That's the point. He signed up vowing loyalty to his Queen and country not a non democratic monolith on foreign soil.

So he will fight in Ireland. I remember a situation where english army and irish civilians stood facing each other. Did not end well for the civilians.

Solasch, I would just like to point out that Julie's nephew joined the British army, whether we were members of the EU or not, and has the right to make his own decision!

Anyway, it really has no connection to us having troops on standby over a "no deal" on Brexit, so why argue about it?

There are small countries, and there are countries who do not realise they are small.

We sell 44% of our exports to the EU. The EU sell 8% of their exports to the UK. Oh! yeah they are really worried.

Re: Send for the Cavalry

Hi

The Troops on standby are not there for keeping the peace.

Military Police for traffic control at Dover and Folkestone.

A special unit trained in document verification for checking passports and travel documentation.

The Home Office may well be offering temporary contracts to staff Mrs May cut when she was home Secretary.

They will be needed to train the new staff required amongst other things.

If HGV's are stacked on the Continental side of the Channel it will be a glorious opportunity for the people smugglers.

The UK only has 89 inspection bays in Kent, and they are not at the Ports, they are up the Motorway.

As from Brexit Day all illegals will be ours, we cannot return them to the EU.

Not that we do now anyway.

Or to put it another way,

That 44% is valued at £274 billion
Their 8% is valued at £341 billion.

We were the 3rd largest economy in the EU, isn't that why Solasch, from the Netherlands, is so worried about us leaving... because they miss out on our contributions to the EU?

You told a time ago he wanted out of the EU, because he didn't want to become oart of an EU army, and someday be employed against his own people.
Now the british army is employed to keep the peace (realist will probably running around in his yellow vest). That could mean use of (controlled) violence against british citizens.
So even being inside the UK poses a risk of facing citizens over the barrel of a gun.
That was my question to julie, not the choice of her son to join the army. I may be a pacifist, but I do respect those men and women who put their life on the line in performing their duty. No discussion about that.

I'm retired, so brexit hardly hits me financially. As to the contribution, that hickup has been solved by the EU commission last week. Less income, less expenditure. Every one of the 27 members receives 0,3 bn less. Big deal.

What you seem to miss is that from those 341 bn you mention, a large part comes from dutch companies. So we would feel it relatively hard, a brexit. For that reason we started preparing in 2016 for a no deal brexit. WE did.
But as to that 341 bn, germany, france, italy etc. won't feel anything. That is why they have been waving goodbye to the UK since 2016.

Didn't get enough practice with how to inter refugees in the thirties and forties, when a lot of impoverished jews came to britain for help. You locked them up in camps. You probably will again, if the mood in some of these threads is any indication.
