Ever been cloned?

My eldest daughter went to got money from her building society and found that she only had a couple of pounds left. She found out that her debit card had been cloned & was being used in Bolivia, they'd taken her money at £34 a time!
Has anyone on here had a similar experience? She thinks it was done at a cashpoint outside her local supermarket.

Re: Ever been cloned?

Yes years ago hubby was working in america for 4 month on the 2nd month his credit card statement arrived and had many transations in the uk for shops I knew he would never shop in and for amounts i knew he would never spend, lucky he was able to prove as he was in america that it wasnt him who made the transations and all was refunded ... hopfully your daughter will get her money back as well.
Supermarkets are well know for the devices on them that cloners use. Tell her to always put her hand over the keypad so it cant be seen when she enters her number.

Re: Ever been cloned?

She thinks there was one of those card readers put in the machine slot, she always covers her hand when putting her number in. I've had trouble changing to a new card on e-bay, they're supposed to send a pin number to confirm details but they haven't, so can't buy anything. Don't like the new quick buy thing on there, don't ask for password anymore.

Re: Ever been cloned?

I was in Aldi one Friday evening just after work and I bought a few items for the weekend. I put my debit card into the machine and it was rejected.

I was shocked and told the lady on the till that that couldn't be right so she called a supervisor who phoned Barclays Bank, from the till I was at, and I spoke to a Barclay's operative.

Apparently, somebody in the USA was attempting to purchase something from Mumbia (India) using my direct debit card in the amount of $95.00

I was asked a few questions as to where I normally shopped, the names of the places I used my card, which I answered etc, for security reasons.

Anyway, Barclays had picked up immediately on this transaction and had immediately frozen my card. Luckily, at the time, I had sufficient money in my purse to pay for my items and Barclays said they had frozen my card at the point of an unusual transaction. I begged them to let it stand for another half hour because I don't normally carry cash, and could I be allowed half an hour to get home and get to a cash point to withdraw some cash, which they let me do; after which I phoned Barclays and told them to continue to freeze my card.

Problem was, it was to take a week to get a new card with a new PIN and I ran out of cash but my boss, bless his darling heart, lent me some money to tide me over until I got a new card.

I looked up the name of the website (Chaadi) I'd been given by Barclays that the purchase on my debit card was being used for, and it was a porn site!

There was a story on Fake Britain the other night about mechanisms that are being used to clone cards. I was lucky because Barclays jumped on this immediately, but others not so vigilant will allow purchases to go through, so check your accounts.

Never in my life have I given any of my bank details to any source over the internet, and I never will, and anyone who does, you should avoid like the plague, especially places like e-Bay etc. I don't trust 'em at all.

Re: Ever been cloned?

Someone had tried to use my credit card number to buy something but, due to the large amount involved, my bank's security cottoned on to it and stopped it. they contacted me and ultimately cancelled the card and sent me a new one.

I was standing behind an old dear at the ATM as she entered the PIN she put a piece of paper over the screen so no one could see the black dots as she typed in the number.

Re: Ever been cloned?

Folks are funny, they cover their hand at the ATM, to stop anyone seeing their PIN number, then when they get home, they order a service over the phone, lets say a Rubbish Skip for example, the person on the end of the line asks them for the sixteen digit card number, the expiry date, and the three digit security number off the back of the card, this is normal practice, but surely armed with this information, at a later date, this information could be used to make subsequent purchases.
