Coronavirus: MPs promised vote on new rules 'wherever possible'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54361294

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Hancock said:

"I am sure that no member of this House would want to limit the government's ability to take emergency action in the national interest as we did in March. And we will continue to involve the House in scrutinising our decisions in the way the prime minister set out last week, with regular statements and debates and the ability for members to question the government's scientific advisers more regularly, gain access to data about their constituencies and join daily calls with the paymaster general. And I hope the new arrangements will be welcomed on all sides of the House and I will continue to listen to colleagues' concerns, as I've tried my best to do so throughout."
Empty words, false promises .....

Hi

Exactly.

The Chiefs are political appointments, loads of money but no experience.

The virus is not going to wait while MP's vote on what steps to take next!!!. The government has to move fast with it's decision making because the virus moves fast amongst the public and when you have a public who for a medium part refuse to adhere to social distancing and as a result virus infections increase, the government need to act immediately to stop these people from behaving irresponsibly and if that means making decisions without MP's getting as vote, then so be it.

Good for the speaker. It's currently an absolute shambles, mixed messages, misinformation, un-coordinated and disjointed. Of course the Government policies should be voted on. Good government management of covid = good economic and health outcomes.

There's no excuse. They have had months to sort out an organised approach. Everyone said there would be a second wave. Kneejerk policies and slapdash strategy abound. We are not in March we are in September. Seems like "let's worry about this tomorrow" thinking when things are not in disaster mode. No planning ahead.

Erm, we have had months and months to come up with policy. There should have been no hasty decision making needed!

Absolutely .....

Yesterday and today and today over 7,000 new (registered) cases have been recorded (probably nearer to 10,000 (including unregistered) according to ONS estimates) - that's more than any day in the "first wave" of March/April/May - over 1000 schools and 52 universities are in some sort of lockdown, as is most of Wales, the North of England and Central Scotland ......

Track, Test and Trace (an utter shambles) is run by ex-Sainsbury executives, Dido Harding and Mike Coupe, with an ex-Sainsbury manager and an ex-Waitrose digital director - there is no prospect of a nationwide testing program for the foreseeable future .....

But this awful vucking firus is debating in a chaotic and at times random manner that means that protective and social protective measures must react to events! Policy has to change quite literally "on the fly" to try to match.

What can't be accurately predicted can not be managed with a fixed program.

It's not IMO that they can't do it, it's that they are only doing half of what needs to be done. So they throw money at a situation and speak to only half the stakeholders. So many council chiefs have reported that they first hear of Govt decisions on BBC news! There's a chronic lack of engagement with the right agencies and a shocking lack of follow through.

Only today Laura K asked Boris how he was going to ensure that people obeyed the rules, how he was going to implement the policies. He completely sidestepped and ignored that question. He mentioned big fines but he did not answer questions on how these were going to be imposed without adequate police or other resources. It's half baked and the trouble is that it's also a terrible waste of public money if it doesn't work.

Of course this approach should be scrutinised in Parliament. It's been going on for months.
