If anyone thinks this, or any, Govt should have £billions of pounds worth of equipment and stock ( and personnel !) lying around in dusty basements waiting for a theoretical disaster to happen they're delusional.

Boris has been doing a great job and comes out of this with a lot of credit so far.

The Gov't response has been measured and sensitive to the scientific advice at hand.

The Govt is ramping up the response as the situation develops.......

Good Government-Good Leadership..

Imagine if the country was run by the media and the Piers Morgan/James O'Brien's of this world!!

We all would be running for the hills living in caves and slaughtering anyone who came within 100 yards!!

As with any 'war'.........The country responds initially with the peacetime facilities, stocks and personnel to hand and then mobilises the nation depending on how the threat develops.

I thought Swimmy, you would understand that!

Good, clear headed response from you. This is a coronavirus with a death percentage of 2, not an ebolavirus with an 80% kill.
Just take a deep breath and carry on. And do as boris says.

The death rate in people over 80 years old is much higher than 2% - taking broad averages in pandemics is very dangerous, because you can miss addressing the real issue with the high risk groups.

If you bothered to read what's going on you would know, and how Rutte has copied the UK strategy.

Rutte closed schools, restaurants etc last weekend. Has the UK?
So who is copying who? Or could there be a common EU strategy and the UK is, as usual, slow to follow?

The strategy is the same - you have a small population and a much smaller country than the UK. The timing of the closure of schools etc is dependent on many things.

So you follow the EU strategy. Thanks for finally answering a question.

Re: The COVID19 Opportunity for the EU

I see that the BBC was up to its old tricks yesterday. They did an article, complete with a HYS comments section, about how all of the world's currencies have tanked as a result of the Covid-19 virus emphasising the value of the pound against the dollar, and in particular against the Euro.

This was being used as a reason to cancel Britain's exit from the EU and return to the European bosom. Some of the comments in the HYS needed to be read to be believed. The amount of bile and real hate directed at those who voted to leave was appalling, wishing that those who did so, in particular the 'Boomers and Gammons' would catch the virus and die from it to teach us a lesson. They (the commentariat) were convinced that the value of the pound had dropped because of Brexit, and not the current pandemic.

Sheesh.

Sheesh.

The Operation Yellow Hammer head bangers didn't expect this ... despite Brexit
