Re: Romanian fruit pickers

should have invested in automation like I said months ago

If the farmers had invested in machines we wouldn't have this problem with importing foreign labour and the small amount of jobs we do have a requirement for, could be paid proper wages and recruit uk workers

Thing is that it's not Farmer Giles that's the dominant force in our agricultural sector, it's HUGE agricultural business that are calling the tune.

Farmer Giles works cooperatively with other small farmers and share high value machines in local cooperatives and the like such as specialist contractors that travel farm to farm, often "Travellers".

The lady farmer interviewed about this yesterday said that the job requires experience and skill and these people are experienced and don't need training. She also mentioned cost.

Re: Romanian fruit pickers

Apparently lots of people here signed up for an interview to be pickers then most dropped out.

Some picking isn't easy work, when my son was about 12 I signed us up for a days bean picking to give him a taste of hard work.
We had to be at the field by 5am, it was first come first chosen.
As we picked, the heavy bean boxes had to be dragged down the rows till full then you had to keep an eye on your picked boxes to make sure no one stole them until 12 pm when you had to lift them yourself with aching arms onto the trailer behind the tractor. We were then paid a small amount.

There were lots of us, experienced travelling pickers mainly who went from one farm to another . We picked the whole field which was destined for Tescos.

I have done lots of fruit picking, we used to go after school and were paid 3d a punnet , it was fun and pocket money in the days when few children got any.

People are 'soft' these days, a bit of hard work is too much for them .

I agree, Meg. Friends of mine used to go hop picking & they said that was hard work, but like a holiday to them.

Re: Romanian fruit pickers

I think times have changed and many of our younger generations are not prepared for hard work and sticking to a strict routine. It's not that it's not possible but they are not used to it and a big adjustment would be required to change that attitude.

On the news just now. The Romanian pickers who have arrived will also train the people who have volunteered to help pick lettuces, as it's a skill. The Romanian's are skilled which is why they are here.

Well she bloody would wouldn't she. There is absolutely no justification in bringing this lot into the UK. None at all.

The government has the power and support to put the Brits on a modern Land Army, there's MORE than enough wanting to do this work, the ONLY thing preventing Brits to do this work is that the industrial agriculture businesses won't pay the circa 15 quid per hour - and the other costs that come with British people.

These industrial agriculture businesses aren't even owned by Brits in most cases. So the SOB's are putting our health - and security - at risk for the benefit of profits that are going offshore.

Security? Too damned right. East Europeans are a traveling crime wave. Authentic records are to be found on the web for the looking.

Yer. Right they will. Justification of this unjustifiable thing is now being INVENTED.

What a farce.

Trying to understand how our health is being put at risk by this move?
