Re: Doctors - The Final Arbitrator?

Can I make a point clear to Davo, the NHS is not free, we have paid into it all our lives, so what gave you the idea we got it free is bothering me, we actually pay in millions of £sss over our life time, even if we are not sick.
I have had more than my fair share, but most of my family haven't been as ill as I have been.
I also paid towards my O.O.P> plus more private pensions so I could have a better standard of living than we get from the government.
And one more thing, lot's of folks pay in the same, never sick and never reach retirement age.
This system we run is fair, and does take care of anybody who is sick, some can't help never paying in, but the others have paid it for them.
I will never ever forget the great Michael Crawford, sick on a table in America, and they wouldn't do anything for him till they saw his insurance policy, what a ruddy horrible system is that.

Ssshhh Wrinkly - I think the government and some members of the NHS would like all that to be forgotten by us

I will never ever forget the great Michael Crawford, sick on a table in America, and they wouldn't do anything for him till they saw his insurance policy, what a ruddy horrible system is that.
Worse than that - following an air crash in America, paramedics insisted on seeing proof of insurance before they'd pick up the injured - no policy, they were left for the free healthcare providers to turn up and take them.

Care in Oz can't be that brilliant or my brother and his wife wouldn't go to dentists here and get their teeth seen to on the NHS or go around various GPs stocking up on medicines that they claim are too expensive 'back home' in Oz.

LOL, probably cheaper to fly to UK and back than get dental treatment here ,I've been on the waiting list since I had emergency treatment 3yrs ago and probably won't get seen for another 3 yrs, but our system still beats the USA

And yet the strange thing is maggis, he says that as much as he'd like to move back to Britain, his standard of living would fall too much. I think he must mean the overall quality and happiness of his life - that makes me feel a tad envious. Maybe that's why the British fiercly defend the NHS - it's the only thing we have left to feel proud about!

Karen we can have the same standards of living if not better as they get in OZ, many go and soon return, it is a very boring place to live, too hot sometimes even for the natives.
I have relatives who have emigrated all over the world, and the favourite place is still Canada.
Those that went to OZ soon up and left for New Zealand where the settled.
Mind you I am talking when they really had to make it for themselves, £10 poms and before that.

That's how my brother got there Wrinkly and, to be fair to him, he worked his socks off to make a go of it. He's often asked me to go over and visit but I have a morbid fear of going anywhere that inhabits anything more dangerous than I am

Not sure if I've told this story on here but here goes: my brother said that after moving to Oz, went off to socialise and try and make friends. He was greeted with one man talking to the others around him (adopt a loud voice with Australian accent) 'How do you know when a plane load of Pohms has landed? When they turn off the engine, you can still hear whining' - my brother burst out laughing and I think the fact that he did helped matters!

My husband lived for a few years in Canada and he loved it - not a bad word to say about the place.

Re: Doctors - The Final Arbitrator?

erhmm no not quite finished - let me get this straight - one guy/gal pays into NHS all their life and is a non-smoker, non-drinker and non- junk food eater and the other guy/gal is the opposite and therefore at sometimes needs extensive treatment for lung, liver etc problems - he/she gets all the treatment [expensive] and the healthy guy/gal gets nothing but his/her contributions pays for the sick one - fair as fair heh?

Don't know how I managed to miss this one! Up until about the 1950s/60s, doctors still advised people to take up smoking to help with anxiety and depression - that played a huge part in smoking becoming such a widely held thing: if doctors recommend it, it's gotta be good for you ...

To be fair to them - as far as I'm aware, nicotine is still the planet's most effective anti-depressant.

I have many 'native' friends over here Wrinkles - where did you get the 'facts' "too hot sometimes even for the natives" or are you throwing that one in for nothing? - happy to receive your 'quotations' or 'url's'
