Reparations for slavery

Should we pay reparations for slavery to the Carribean ?

If so who too?

Re: Reparations for slavery

No. I dont think we should.
This was a very bad time in our past and we should never forget the wrongs and cruelty that took place.
However if your going to pay out reparations who would be those be payable too and who would be paying them. If anyone should be paying them it should be the descendants of those who were involved in slavery making money from it .

I think its far more important to ensure that modern day slavery is stopped as there are modern day slaves still.

Re: Reparations for slavery

I am not a fan of blaming future generations for what we do today so I don't like to think we should take the blame for what generations before us did. TBH I have a slave in my family tree so who exactly should we pay the money to ?

I think we'd be better putting money into stopping present day slavery.

We also shouldn't forget our part in the past but also the nations we took people from were involved in it too, some of them happily sold their brothers and sisters into slavery and some still do. No nation really had clean hands.

USA usually takes the rap for slavery in the Confederate states.
Interestingly, or otherwise, the first slave owner was one Anthony Johnson, himself a black man brought in the 1611 landings.

If we did we should only pay the actual slaves, not their descendants

Re: Reparations for slavery

Would this include anyone involved in slavery or just Britain as per?

Re: Reparations for slavery

The whites did not capture slaves. They required their original black owners to take them to the transport ships.

So not quite the black and white issue it is sometimes made out to be.

I think the only thing we can do now is to stamp it out everywhere we can and educate future generations to stop it happening again.

Re: Reparations for slavery

Isn't that why we have such a large foreign aid bill?
