Re: Just letting off steam

When my mother-in-law died in '87, the day after the great storm, there was no grief, only relief on the part of all her family, including children and siblings. Her wake had a party atmosphere and only lacked party poppers and streamers.

The trouble is when people get older (say after 85 years old) they get very stubborn and when they've made their minds up about something, you can't get them to change it.

The problem there is they don;t always have all the information to be so stubborn. Things have changed so much in their lives that it is impossible for most elderly people to be aware of all the changes.

Re: Just letting off steam

There are a lot of elderly people who are very with it and know how many beans make five in the 21st century.

I keep in touch with a lady who will be 96 this year. She saved my life in 1952 when I was two. A bolting horse and cart nearly totalled me. She has all her marbles and is a lovely person.

Re: Just letting off steam

I met my husband when I was just 21 and he was 18 so there is just 2 years between us , Mother in law (tobe) invited me to a family meal not knowing this , She found out at the table full of my husband to be's family, turned to me and said Have you brought him or are you just renting him by the hour !!!! I was gobsmacked We have never seen eye to eye even after 30 odd years ... but she is rude to his brothers wife too so I dont take it personal.... never excepted her boys have grown up

Re: Just letting off steam

Yep Baggy - just dont understand the problem some MILs have. They should embrace the marriage - they are gaining a son or daughter ! Also its horrendous for the partner if they are not accepted and could instil further problems in the marriage - which I have seen. I persevered with my mum in law and it turned out fine - eventually...
