Sounds to me like they wanted to get that update out to as many people as quickly as possible for whatever reason, but likely nothing to do with hackers. That's just a scare story to make the weak minded flock to the update.

Mine didn't change anything, just said it was updated.

Chrome checks for updates and installs them automatically as soon as you access that area of the menu. Usually very quickly too if it's not a major version update, so it will say it is updated almost immediately.
