Well, what would YOU do ?

A young woman found £52000 deposited in her bank account. She knew it was an error but, egged on by her boyfriend, she decided to say nothing. She spent £9000 and the rest moved into another account. Apparently it's a criminal offence to hang on to money which isn't yours and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Of course she was found out but the judge took pity on her and she got 12 months community service. Would you have owned up ?

Re: Well, what would YOU do ?

I would because the money would be easily traceable to me once the mistake was found.

Actually that is peanuts compared to the Kiwi case where millions were deposited into a couple's account by mistake a year or so ago

I don't know how anyone could get any pleasure from spending money which was not legally their own

I hope the judge made her pay it back..

I certainly wouldn't spend it, I would be too certain they would find me.

Re: Well, what would YOU do ?

I would most certainly have alerted the bank to the error IMMEDIATELY.

I have been through some tough financial times in my life but never would I steal money, especially not of that quantity.
