Re: The insomniacs thread

Animals, they are a good example, how for instance, does a bird remember how to build a nest when she never built one before?.

I stand corrected, I didn't know first time birds got lessons in nest building, I thought when they reached a certain size they were kicked out of the home nest to fend for themselves.

Re: The insomniacs thread

They do leave the nest, but their first efforts at nest building can be a bit clumsy; they learn from experience and seeing other birds do it. Fellow townie here!

Perhaps you make it up in your dreams or when you can't sleep

Have the scientists, or whoever gets paid to figure these things out, ever found out if animals dream?. I know my dog looks very happy when he's asleep, must be dreaming of the bitch next door.

I would think that scientists will have studied animals and whether they dream. I believe that dogs dream - I watch my dog running in her sleep and sometimes she even howls, so she must be dreaming something. I think dreams are the way that the brain "sifts and sorts" to unjumble the thoughts and feelings we have accumulated - a mechanism for unwinding and unscrambling perhaps. Dreams are never very rational and often they make no sense at all, but they must be an important process for humans and other animals. I wonder if we didn't dream, would our brains suffer an overload of information - (just a thought to go to sleep on).

Cats dream too, the twitching and REM. Dreams seem to make so much sense when you are dreaming, but when you wake and can remember a bit of them they weren't rational at all. People from different periods of your life who never met one another happily appear. And it all seems perfectly normal during the dream.
