David Cameron and Lex Greensill to be grilled by MPs

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-57024452

Former prime minister David Cameron and Australian financier Lex Greensill both face questions from MPs next week, amid ongoing concerns about lobbying.

Mr Greensill - who has yet to comment on the controversy - appears before the Treasury committee on Tuesday.

Mr Cameron will face MPs on the same committee two days later.

Treasury committee chairman, Conservative MP Mel Stride, said: "The committee is determined to answer the key question as to whether HM Treasury responded appropriately to the lobbying on behalf of Greensill Capital, including that carried out by David Cameron."
I hoipe that the MPs set the grill at HIGH .....

Hi

Attempting to use the NHS as a cash machine is simply not right.

Sleaze is wrong irrespective of the party involved.

Greensill hearing live: Lex Greensill blames insurance and Covid for collapse of firm

https://www.ft.com/content/fe7ad8c8-...2-3527cb054438

MPs are grilling Lex Greensill about the events leading up the collapse of his financial firm Greensill Capital and how he used former prime minister David Cameron to lobby ministers for help

The questions facing Lex Greensill
Jim Pickard

Lex Greensill, the 44-year-old Australian financier, will face questions such as these when he appears in front of the Treasury select committee:

• How much was former prime minister David Cameron paid — in salary and share options — as an adviser?

• How deeply involved was Cameron in Greensill Capital’s attempts to drum up new business?

• How did Greensill deploy the former prime minister to try to get tweaks to Covid loan schemes run by the Treasury and business department which — if Cameron’s lobbying had been successful — would have benefited his company?

• What did Greensill know about the business practices of Sanjeev Gupta, owner of Britain’s Liberty Steel — for example the way that the industrial tycoon tried to breach a threshold on Covid state loans by incorporating new entities?

• How did Greensill start providing finance for Gupta’s GFG group and how were the pair first introduced?

• What can you tell us about Germany’s financial watchdog, BaFin, filing a criminal complaint against Greensill Bank for suspected balance sheet manipulation?

UK regulator investigates collapsed Greensill Capital

The UK financial regulator has disclosed it is “formally investigating” issues linked to Greensill Capital and is co-operating with authorities in Germany, Australia, Switzerland and other countries as they probe the collapsed supply-chain finance firm.

The comments in a letter from Nikhil Rathi, the Financial Conduct Authority chief executive, to Mel Stride, the Conservative MP who chairs the House of Commons Treasury select committee, are the first confirmation of involvement by the regulator after Greensill went into administration in March.

The revelation emerged in a wider release on Tuesday of letters and documents by the committee, including a deluge of text messages from former prime minister David Cameron to government and Whitehall figures in early 2020 begging them to help Greensill.

Treasury committee documents: Cameron texts

https://www.ft.com/content/fe7ad8c8-...2-3527cb054438

The Treasury select committee has made public a series of communications from David Cameron relating to Greensill Capital — including text messages the former UK prime minister sent to top government and Whitehall figures calling on them to help the supply chain finance firm.

According to the files, Cameron — who signs off his messages “DC” — lobbied an even wider group of people in government at the start of the pandemic in March and April last year than previously thought.

To chancellor Rishi Sunak, to Michael Gove, Cabinet Office minister, to Richard Sharp, a banker who was advising Sunak, and is now chair of the BBC, to Sir Tom Scholar, permanent secretary at the Treasury.

In one week in March, as he messaged Scholar almost daily, he apologised: “One last point then I promise I will stop annoying you.” The next day, frustrated, he said: “Am now calling CX (Sunak), Gove, everyone.”
The rest of the inquiry is covered by the FT and currently concerns financial dealing.

Grilling looms for David Cameron after MPs press Lex Greensill over collapse

https://www.ft.com/content/9061d4a1-...0-a8c0e1266277

In 2010, when David Cameron was UK prime minister, he made a speech criticising lobbyists. “We all know how it works. The lunches, the hospitality, the quiet word in your ear, the ex-ministers and ex-advisers for hire, helping big business find the right way to get its way.”

Eleven years later Cameron’s own relentless lobbying has been exposed in a treasure trove of Personal Messages sent to senior members of the Tory government.

The messages on WhatsApp, text and email — sent on 57 occasions from the start of the pandemic in 2020 — were released by the former prime minister at the request of the Treasury select committee.

The flurry of messages over three months saw the former prime minister lay on the flattery as he sought — unsuccessfully — to change the rules around Covid debt schemes to the benefit of his client Greensill Capital between March and May last year.
