Besides... an enema can only go so high, and does not do a thourough job of cleaning out the entire GI tract.. It's pretty much usesless for enteroscopy
An enema for a sigmoidoscopy and a colonic for a colonoscopy is perfectly adequate... and usually much better tolerated (and preferred) than strong laxatives.

Here, men start getting annual prostate exams at 40. Both my boys have had them... they are 44 and 42. They also get an annual PSA blood test.

I would much prefer an enema any day of the week (I've had both). Laxtives are risky (can lead to kidney failure, as well as other complications) and you just feel so weak and poorly after having one. In comparison, there's a much lower risk with an enema (it's just water) and no where near as uncomfortable or as 'violent'. At least that's what I've found.
Kidney failure? OMG.

My doctor said even a colonoscopy is not without its risks as there's a chance of puncture, OOOH OUCH!!!!

Re: Who's had a colonoscopy before??

Here's the thing.. People with normal healthy kidneys will NOT... I repeat NOT develop kidney failure from laxatives taken for an endoscopy prep. Perhaps if someone already suffers from renal insufficiency.. dehydration developing from volume loss due to extreme diarrhea might create a problem with renal function. In which case its alway imperitive to continue to drink fluids during the process. However, if someone is at risk from a prep, there are other forms of bowel cleanses availabe. Go-Lytely provides fluid volume as well as replacement of electrolytes during the process.

Renal failure is really not something most folks have to worry about during a colonoscopy prep. An enema does NOT provide proper cleansing of the GI tract as I said before.. If you want the most from your colonoscopy.... ie.. giving the doc a nice clean view of your bowels so any polyp or lesion may be spotted.... take the laxative prep.

There is no medical procedure that is without some risk. But one must weigh the slight risk against the benefits of catching a cancerous or pre-cancerous lesion or tumor early. while your life can still be saved.

Not specifically at 60 it is just a regular check given by your GP. These days though it is a routine part of blood screening too - don't know exactly what they look for but an elevated number depending on your age leads to further investigation.

The test is called PSA... Prostate Specific Antigen test. A high number indicates there may be prostate cancer present.
