Deaf for a day

Found this very interesting http://blog.hearingdogs.org.uk/deaf-for-the-day/ perhaps everyone should try standing in others shoes for a day, we might all become more understanding ?

Re: Deaf for a day

I remember years ago on a course I was doing we had to put plugs in our ears and go out and about to learn about the effect of deafness. It was one of the most effective parts of the course!

Great idea Julie...there are a lot more issues that go with loss of hearing. Would be ideal to include this experiment into all training courses even if its just a short period, would make people aware of the difficulties facing hard of hearing people every day of their lives.

Re: Deaf for a day

It's a great idea. When I started losing my hearing, people I told thought it would be funny to imitate sign language to me. It's not something that can be understood unless you experience it for yourself. I'm lucky not to be totally deaf, but still need fairly strong and sophisticated aids in both ears, and the problem is getting steadily worse. Even with the aids it's difficult to hear in some environments and I'm always self conscious about asking people to repeat themselves.
On the plus side, it just shows me how wonderful the human body is, and how difficult mere humans find it to replicate the efficiency of our natural organs.

It can be embarrassing when you keep having to ask people to repeat themselves, I find they get annoyed with you, especially the younger ones, mine is not too bad at the moment but I know it will get worse, just like my Dad's did.

Re: Deaf for a day

Interesting video Julie, must have come as a shock to him to experience not hearing for a day.

I have digital aids in both ears, a big improvement but I still find I have to ask 'Pardon' at times

Me too Mags. I have to remind myself at times they are an aid only, normal hearing we will never have again. (probably not in my lifetime...but who knows for the future.
