In 1967 there was a joke along the lines that -

When my Grandfather was a young man, if you were queer you got 2 years hard labour; when my Father was a young man if you were queer you got 6 months. Now they've just made it legal; I hope they don't make it compulsory!

The problem is, for many homosexuals in many countries, being homosexual is neither "gay" nor a "joy". In the "enlightened" West, we have largely abandoned the prejudices and fears which have been in vogue for centuries (although some prejudice still exists). In other parts of the world this is still far from the case and the world has a long way to go before a person's sexuality is regarded as the business of no-one but him/herself.
