Savvy – good luck with your brave foray into the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada etc. The links below may be of use to you:

This website will help you find out where you are:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ca...4d-119.4179324

This one will help you with any words you cannot understand or spell:

https://www.lexico.com/en

The two links below will help you understand some of the internet slang / emoticons / abbreviations used on OFF – beware though not all can be found on these links, or anywhere else – some posters make them up:

https://www.internetslang.com

http://www.muller-godschalk.com/acronyms.html

Finally, this one is the only reference I have to Yorkshire ‘language’:

Just one final comment though, don't even ask about the Scottish language, that's an entirely different language and ball game!

I'll go along with most of those but draw the line at `scraps`. In West Yorkshire, it's fish 'n' chips wi bits.

Some further study here...

If visiting Yorkshire, print it off so that you can communicate in the correct manner.

Re: Where Am I

We Northern Folk are a friendly bunch by and large in contrast to those who choose (christ knows why) to live in the metropolis.

There's always one isn't there! Oh well, if you must.

The link below gives examples of some Scottish sayings but there are from what I know many, many more. The majority of these though cannot be understood unless the person is Scottish:

I'm a Scot. I think I speak fairly good English. This a bit of a double edged sword. The English think I'm posh. The Scots think I'm English.

No problem with Scots who speak English at all, it's just when they launch into the real Scottish language most times it's impossible for us English to understand. It's like a Glaswegian, that accent is difficult even if speaking slowly, at the usual speed Glaswegians often speak, it's impossible to understand for most of us from 'down south'.

You are doing well if that's what those people think, I am guessing you might have been away from Scotland for some time? Although Doncaster has more Scots living there than other places, it has a direct link with Scotland from what I understand as shown in the link below:

Yes, most of my life. But I never had a broad Scots accent. My mother was very strict about how we spoke and my father was from the Outer Hebrides where English was the second language. Spoken well.
