Same happened in the cleaning businesses they prefered to bring in Eastern Europeans rather than recruit here. Now wages are too low for the traditional workforce to take they need top up benefits to manage.
Employers don't suffer but low paid workers do and tax payers pay for it all.
Absolutely, hit the nail on the head. All artificially arranged for the movement of people. As Julies says, the jobs were advertised abroad through the recruitment agencies. They could pay less wages as accommodation was included (whether it be substantial or not, was of no concern) Our workers could not afford the lower wages as they had to keep themselves, and pay their bills out of the little that was on offer.
The days when trains took thousands from London to Kent to work in the fields of the hops, strawberries , apple and cherry orchards. It was like a holiday for those coming out of London . The local mums in the villages would work on the farms, picking the strawberries etc, and took their children with them. It was apparently great fun according to my mother in law, and a community event and we relied on seasonal vegetables and fruit .
However, the hop fields were finished and yet again German hold 60% of the hop fields in EUrope, the orchards were drastically reduced or closed and fruit started to be imported , at twice the price. Who remembers when we were being encouraged to buy French and Italian golden delicious ? The green grocers were filled with foreign fruit and veg. The beer was made abroad, the blackcurrants were shaken off the bushes mechanically and sold to Channel for their perfume, and so the new farming methods under massive greenhouses began and foreign imports helped to disburse EU migrant workers throughout Europe, because they needed the work. We didn't count any longer, bar work or call centres for our people.
