A bit of an update. Since I was last here, the Rcd has tripped on two occasions with us discovering it when we get up. We bought and installed a mechanical clock and can see that on both occasions it tripped at exactly 6am. We don't have anything on a timer that could explain it and isn't it too much of a coincidence that any appliance would cause it at exactly the same time?

Curious and curiouser!!!!! Any ideas?
The boiler has no timer on it, any thermostats for your heating set to go off at 6am. Any thermostats on your radiators?

What about your fridge/freezer, it has a motor that kicks in from time to time to keep everything cold/frozen. Could it be this motor is kicking in at 6am (a coincidence if it is though) Any outside security lighting that is going off because it is sensing something around 6am?

TV, satellite box on sleep set to wake up at 6am to record something?

Coffee maker, tea maker going off at 6am?

Re: RCD keeps tripping

Hi Lorna,

Do you have anything set to switch on at 6:00 am? Tripping off supply at exactly at that time is more than mere coincidence. Can't see it being your boiler at this stage as it would trip off every time you used it. Do you have an old-style electric alarm clock set to go off at that time?

TVs and satellite boxes by and large are double insulated so no earth required. Have you as Dodge suggests some kind of `Teasmaid` programmed to make a cuppa at that time? Does your freezer have an auto-defrost setting? This type of freezer has a small heating element inside it which stops ice building up. They do this automatically every twenty four hours. If this is the case, you could try plugging your freezer into a plug-in timer and set it to knock the freezer off from say 5:00am to 7:00am to test the theory.

What about a plug in rcd?, if you suspect an appliance, you could plug that into the rcd and if it’s tripped when you get up, then that’s what’s causing it, then it shouldn’t trip your rcd in the board...

Are you on electric price tariffs say for economy 7 or somesuch?

It could be that switching off that trips it.

Are their factories or other facilities nearby that start up at that time every day ?

Does your electricity come in to your property on an overhead line?

I think Judd's defrost suggestion is most likely.

Not necessarily, the RCDs in consumer units tend to react quicker because if a faulty appliance is plugged into an plug-in RCD, the fault current has to travel through the plug-in in order for it to operate by which time the main RCD will have triggered.

We had that scenario play out at work. Something was tripping out the sub RCD unit in the kitchen area. The electrician who the company used to install all the electrics when we first moved in many years go, gave us plug in RCD's so we could see what kitchen appliance was causing the trouble.

Turned out it was a couple of things BUT with regards to the RCD, the plugin RCD tripped, the RCD on the sub unit tripped AND the RCD on the main consumer unit tripped. I was like, what the hell, shouldn't only the plugin RCD have tripped!!

We eventually found out that if the kettle was used, the amount of amps on the kitchen circuit exceeded the 20amp rating of the MCB. This MCB decided to go faulty and stay in the off position, the lever would not stay in the on position. Electrician came out, replaced the faulty MCB and put a 30amp rated one in it's place. Not had an RCD trip since.

Some very good replies to this topic.

Basic it is your electric fault on something tripping out its a safe defence.
