Strawberries

I planted up some strawberries just before Christmas. This is a tiered planter I got for them (tier 5). They are planted in compost with some composted horse manure mixed in. I hope they like the planter as much as I do.



I don't know how well they'll do but more are planted in the compost the tomatoes were grown in last year.



Even then, there were plants left over so I gave some to my neighbour.

Mart I have got my strawberries in troughs like those in your first picture and they do well.

Mine are Mara des Bois, a perpetual variety that fruits up to the first frost.

I usually replace the compost in the spring but owing to the lockdown I didn't last year and surprisingly got twice as many fruit .

I don't know what variety the strawberries are. I'll have to ask the the friend who gave them to me. She runs the allotment I help out on (in better times).

Looks a nice set up Mart, my strawberries are in open ground but didn't do too well last year as I over fertilised them, which makes them generate foliage rather than fruit, so keep them well watered but resist feeding them too well.

Thanks for the tip Barry. I hope the slugs won't get at them up there. They will have to be good mountaineers to get at them anyway.

I'm hoping to grow strawberries in pots next year.

I know nothing about how to do it so any help would be appreciated.

When do I buy my strawberry plants?
When do I plant them?
Do I keep them in the greenhouse until warmer weather?
What compost do I use?

Looks promising Mart.

One of my dogs always used to nick my strawberries, so I netted them over to keep her and the birds off.
Then one day I caught her with her head under the net, foraging again!
