You're absolutely right!
It comes from cobbler's awls - balls.

Eventually just Cobblers! was used as an exclamation, suggesting something was nonsense.
A load of old cobblers is an expansion of that.
It was originally from the East End of London, but was taken to other Commonwealth countries by emigrants.
I heard it in NZ and Australia, and I've heard it in Canada. I use




the expression myself.
And that's no cobblers!
Well...whaddaya know 'bout that?
Is bellybutton lint .... Belly Fluff?
