I mean, I can get me head around phasers and transporters, Vulcans and Klingons and Borg and tractor breams but I struggle with this.

Can't see the LHC creating miniature black holes per se, there won't be enough mass for that. Black holes by definition are black because their gravity caused by their mass is so strong that even particles of light can't escape the gravity's pull. Maybe small tears between alternate dimensions?
