Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

I have to admit that I am a complete philistine in all matters artistic, but what really throws me about photography is why some photographers will spend hundreds, or even thousands of pounds on equipment, to just take a photograph of something which they then put onto a computer to change!
I can take a photo on my fifty quid Lumix and do that, so why spend hundreds or thousands on equipment that doesn't produce what you want?

I agree Barry and I usually prefer 'before' photographs to those shown after 'enhancement' .

Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

I used to do lots of editing/fiddling ... just for fun. But not so much nowadays.

Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

I might edit to produce what my eyes saw but the camera didn't quite capture. I saw the leaves in the background of this photo but the camera didn't bring them out. I saw some detail in the petals that the camera didn't reproduce. A little bit of cropping done.

Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

Every digital camera edits, true. Just because one may have a cheap point and shoot, the camera actually edits internally if only in jpeg, to produce the best that the camera can.

This is a concept not understood by people not into photograpy.

So editing a photo using an editing suite is no different except one can produce the photo one wants and not a random choice made by a camera.

So my question remains, why spend thousands on a camera if it doesn't then produce the photo that you want and you have to post edit anyway?

to produce a better photo is the simple answer different issue to editing, don't confuse the two . You understand about noise in a photo don't you for just to mention one issue or colour fringing for another

Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

I edit mine because it's not an all singing and dancing expensive camera!
If I had an expensive one that has different effects etc. I probably wouldn't edit, if I understood how to work it that is!

The difference as I see it is, is your picture a piece of art or a snapshot of a memory?
If it's to remind you of someone or something, you might want to leave it as it comes.
If you want to have something artistic you might want to fiddle.

Re: To Tweak or Not To Tweak?

Somewhere I have a photo of the Twin Towers taken from the ferry.
It wasn't a good one, the water was not level and the towers weren't distinct.
When I found it a few years ago I edited it, it made the picture even more precious.

I'll try to find it later.

Tessa. There are times when you want a particular subject only but editing out everything else is the only way
