Yes but so many are women now, that 'firemen' isn't really an appropriate term. That's fair enough.
But old habits die hard!

I still find myself saying 'policemen' instead of 'police officers', and given that half are women, that's bad of me.

Firefighters seems unnecessarily aggresive, perhaps firecalmers or firedampers.
