Woo-Hoo
Sunset will never be earlier than it is today! And, having turned into a dreich and dreary afternoon, it is getting murky already. Tomorrow, and upto and including the actual shortest day, it is forecast to be cold and hopefully bright.
So it might even seem better from tomorrow! Let's hope.
Even better for you DM(US) - you'll get an extra minute afternoon light from Sunday

Know what you mean Dandysmom-I am so looking forward to the nights becoming lighter even if its only by a minute-its a start and things can only get better
