Re: Feelings about Christmas

I don't bother with Xmas, mainly because I am on my own, although friends do ask me to go to visit them; but I feel Xmas is for families and children.

I also feel that it is too commercialised nowadays.

Hope everyone's Xmas arrangements will go well.

Re: Feelings about Christmas

I believe you are right Christmas is for families and children and not all of us have such things. It does however seem strange to me that as you get older you suddenly get very disenchanted with the whole idea of Christmas. The commercialisation of this time is getting outragious and I really can't see where it will all end.

Re: Feelings about Christmas

I have mixed feelings about it :-/

I loved it as a child. And before my brother passed away, I liked it very much as it was a day when all the family were together (and I guess we were still quite young then too). But now Birthdays and Christmas and even New Year, always has an element of sadness. It hits my mum the hardest.

But we try to stay happy for the younger generation, who didn't really know him - most of them weren't even born when he died. So it's not fair on them so we do our best for them

I do agree it's very commercialised now - feel sorry for the parents who have to buy the latest toys (which can be quite expensive!) for their kids. I still like visiting family, and it still feels like a 'jolly' time

Do you think we should start a special Xmas Day thread for those who don't want to bother with the hustle and bustle and just spend time with some online friends instead

Re: Feelings about Christmas

Christmas aint the same now the kids have grown up, . . they're all middle aged now.
We used to have them and their partners round every year until 5 years ago but this meant a sitting of 12 at the table, the girls helped out with cooking etc but it got too much even for me.

My son lives down the street from us and we've been invited for xmas lunch but TBH I can't be bothered going, my wife's going so I'll be in the bad books for not going, . . but sod it, it's my xmas day too and I shall spend it how I wish to spend it.

Must say I don't like leaving the animals behind, not so much Cheetah as it's probably just like any other day for her, but Rocky. Might take him with me this year

Re: Feelings about Christmas

I love Christmas!! I have just been wrapping presents, still quite a few to buy though! All the family come here to me for Christmas, we will be eleven for Christmas dinner and the ages will range from 11 years old (my youngest grand-daughter) to ninety one years old (my father). I always think that we ought to make the best of it whilst we can because situations can change at the drop of a hat. I am not sure if I would be so fond of Christmas if I were on my own though!

I think this is a brilliant idea. I shall be on my own this Christmas except for Granny who is deaf and drives me around the bend. She may end up in the freezer with the turkey or in the oven with the stuffing.
