Who remembers those blue Police boxes?

What were they used for exactly? For the public to call the Police, or for the Police to keep in touch with each other? Were they locked? What happened to them?

I have no recollection of them at all.

Re: Who remembers those blue Police boxes?

We had quite a few around the outskirts of Middlesbrough when I was a kid.
I must have been taken and held in most of them.
They were for holding the suspects with me it was because I was a runaway and they had a black phone to get in touch with the local police stations.
Yes they were locked and they at onetime were a bit of a landmark.
For what its worth they were better than the police stations because you could not get out of them unless the copper let you out.
Whilst the police stations were a joke at that time they would sit you down next to the front door and when the copper behind the desk turned away you could just walk out and be on the run again.
Happy days.

That ones looking a bit shabby Omah and that chair was a pain in the rear I could never sit on it cos it was to high so I had to sit in the corner on the floor. I was only around 8 or 9 at the time. The one on Marton Road was always well looked after and painted regularly. I suppose today it would have been filled with graffitti.
