Re: Does anyone think that you're odd because of your hobbies?

Nothing odd about collecting watches Ffosse, lots of people do it. The only problem I can see is the cost involved, not a cheap hobby I would imagine. I only have three watches; a Rado which I treated myself to on my 50th, an old gold full hunter pocket watch which was my Granddad's and a cheap sekonda for everyday use. If I could afford it, I can see that I might be interested in collecting more, particularly the old ones.

I was with my brother shopping in a Cotswold village, he pointed at a house across the valley, on the horizon, and said 'that's our house'. 'Wow, have you taken any good photos?'. 'Photos! erm, no, why?'

If I was him I'd be taking shots at sunrise, sunset, all four seasons with every camera setting imaginable.

Most people just don't get it.

I know people that have never taken photos, they just can't see the point.

That's a nice memory. Is it a happy one for you? It's a shame that we don't have these types of shops now. Specialist shops for just one thing.

I think my strangest hobby is posting on this forum! It's not something I really talk about to people who know me Otherwise it's all activity based run of the mill stuff - yoga, hiking, cooking, gardening, travel etc.

Actually, I've been thinking recently (seriously) about taking up something to make me sparkle and give me a reason.

I've toyed with the idea of buying a keyboard, but still mulling it over. Or maybe drawing. But it's been so long since I did either.

Sigh.

I don't think collecting watches is an odd hobby at all Ffosse. Watches are amazing miniature engineering masterpieces, especially the old wind up mechanical ones.

Having been a mechanical engineer I am fascinated at the skill that goes into producing the small parts (gears and bearings) and in times gone by they were all produced by hand.....

A lot smaller than the engineering I was used to.....

I don’t have any hobbies really, except collecting musical boxes. I only have four but they fascinate me.
Is hen keeping and occasional winemaking, a hobby?

I would not like to collect anything that incurs regular dusting!

I love the sound of music boxes, both the punched disc type (eg, Polyphon) and the pinned drum type . I'd really enjoy trying to restore an old, non-functioning music box.

Unfortunately, from what I've seen, they cost and arm and a leg and I couldn't possibly justify paying that sort of money.
