Re: Dentists Charge Like Wounded Bulls

Sounds about right to me .
Private dentistry in the UK is horrendous too
At least £250 for a filling .
I pay £52 for a hygentist visit twice a year .
The dentist charges £21.50 for a NHS appointment which in the last few visits has taken all of three minutes .
Thankfully there has been nothing wrong .so I don't know the price for a NHS filling .

I pay £21.50 (NHS) for the check up and a clean and polish. For all the years, l nave been going to the dentists, the clean and polish have always been included with the check up.

Re: Dentists Charge Like Wounded Bulls

I get a clean and polish twice a year included in my monthly fee of £21....I'm wondering though why I need two Hygienist visits at £70 a time? People do remark how nice my teeth are but I think that's because I do look after then....but £70 a time seems excessive to me especially as I'm in and out in 20 minutes......I might stop that.

I have just four of my own teeth yet I pay the same for a check up as someone with a full set of their own teeth on the NHS. Why?
I once asked my NHS dentist what is the difference between NHS treatment and private treatment. His answer? The price.

Re: Dentists Charge Like Wounded Bulls

There is a large disparity between both private with insurance,
& private without insurance, as well as between nhs &
private.
At the same time the number of dentists willing to do nhs
work has fallen, with a lot of dentists opting out of nhs work!
The main driver of high prices is imo health insurance!
Which, encourages practicioners to continually increase prices
at every pretext, because they know there is a large pot of
money available in the insurance companies coffers!
This practice also eventually puts the cost of health insurance
up to excessively high levels, thus leaving thousands more
People out of the loop!
I think this situation prevails right across the health system
in varying degrees, depending on the aount that privatisation
infiltrated the nhs!
You can see this principle in action in your local GPs
where a group of doctors form a group practice, ostensibly
for efficiency reasons, but really to gather a large base of
nhs customers together, in order to then submit their invoices
to the nhs for payment! This in turn leads to reduced patient
doctor interaction ie. 5mins per patient! Which often causes
patients to double book, thus carrying an extra cost to nhs!

Regards Donkeyman!

It states scale and polish is included with the NHS check up and X-rays as well.
Why do they make people go to a hygienist and have to pay extortionate prices?

Sounds like jobs for the boys to me.

Muddy, For my NHS charge of £22.70 or whatever it is. I am in there for much longer than a few minutes. My dentist is very thorough.... Thank Goodness!

They sure do love to charge. Right up there with them is the Vet, I'm sure I must be a lot paler when I come out of their surgery.

Personally I'd rather pay for a hygienist to clean my teeth than to leave that to a dentist. Dentists should stick to dentistry.

My teeth (pictured) are good and l feel lucky l still have teeth. My dentist doesn’t just skim over them, she is very thorough.
I’d have thought a hygienist was only necessary if you have gum disease as they go deeper under your gums.
