Rhian, you are suggesting some very pretty combinations. I do like the pops of color to lift the brown.

Carol, here's the living area of my little vacation beach place I just happened to put on the market this week. Come to find out, it is customary around here to sell with furnishings, so I had great fun last week switching out some of my favorite pieces and art with some bargain pieces:

Surfermom, everything I expected from you, cool smart and impeccable.

I have gone down a different path.

After years of being told what to do, white carpets and Duck Egg Blue have no place in my life at all.

A clean break is so refreshing, a sense of freedom.

i fully expect that it will be changed again when I find a new lady.

I can live with that.

I am just enjoying the freedom at the moment.

Yes, swimfeeders, you go do what you like - right down to the lavender floral draperies! I completely get the freedom aspect of your new place. That was the primary reason I bought the place - to escape to a place where I could paint, surf, and enjoy the outdoors. Thank you for the nice comments.

I feel like i have pirated the thread, so I am redirecting back to Carol's question.

Carol, I always start with my favorite colors (green and blue) and then build a color scheme around them. After my favorite color is decided, I choose a neutral that can serve as the background. Then I choose a compliment or contrast to go with the first.

Beach place: Emerald green, cobalt blue - background a creamy greenish taupe that isn't too dark, but contrasts the bright white. The floor has grey/blue veins to stay with the cool color scheme.

House: The walls and ceilings were already a warm, light mustard. I could either pay thousands to repaint or play it down. I added a warmer green, navy, and red that cool all the warmth.

The best advice I can give is to not worry about what is in - or out. Choose colors that make you feel calm or happy.
