One good thing that the builder did to my house was to fit a decent boiler. I live in a small village which does not have mains gas, so it's oil heating (or some people use LPG). It's a Grant "Vortex" outside boiler that's very efficient and has a built in thermal store so that the boiler desn't have to fire up to provide (very) hot water.We also opened up the original stone fireplace in the lounge and had a multi-fuel stove fitted. We buy logs - usually a couple of tons at a time from our coalman - and split them ourselves.

Here's the house. Originally built about 1840 and extended in 1896. The insulation really works, but I found out that I also needed to ensure that the ventillation was correct. If you over-insulate you can cause pockets of stagnant air and mould to grow.The total enegy bill - oil, electricity and solid fuel comes to about £1600 p.a. I'm using a lot less fuel now, but the cost of heating oil is ridiculous.
