The Rosetta Stone

OK, so a couple of soldiers - french, I think - find this chunk of stone somewhere in Egypt in the 1700s. It is covered in strange carvings - part ancient Greek and part Hieroglyphs.

"Experts" claim to have translated it - and it is used as a bedrock for translations of almost everything that followed.

But - what if they were wrong?

What if it were nothing more than an ancient 'Banksie' having a laugh?

Wouldn't that throw a very large spanner into academic works?

I agree Tabs, we believe lots of the experts, who later change their minds about things.
They tell us stories about what went on but they can't really know.

Re: The Rosetta Stone

Hmmm,some so called experts.

Besides how could they prove it?

Some people are very good at talking the talk,..

I personally wouldn't believe a word of it.

Well Greek was and is a very well understood language still in usage today so it didn't take much of an expert to understand it.

The Rosetta Stone was one of many such stones (stelae) which recorded decrees. It is important because it records the decree in 3 different languages.

Thus if you know one of the languages, i.e. Greek, then this greatly helps you translate the other 2.

Hence the Rosetta Stone greatly contributed to us being able to understand heiroglyphics.

Re: The Rosetta Stone

Strangely it survived, but the knowledge of how the pyramids et al were built was lost.

Deciphered by Champollion a French scholar who also started the interest in Egyptology. Carl Sagan dedicated a good part of his `Cosmos` book to him.
