The fairground is pitched up on Friday evening to open on Saturday morning. The Mayor opens it and the Town Crier reads, the Mop Charter. They have the traditional Pig Roast and the Mayor allows free rides for a short time.
Most of it is taken down the next day but erected again, the following Friday until Saturday night. This is referred to as the ‘Runaway Mop’.
By Sunday, they are gone and the shopkeepers are happy again to get back to ‘business as usual’!

Autumn.Pros:-
The lovely colours.
Lingering smell of wood smoke on the air.
Delicious soups and stews to tickle the taste buds.
Frost bejeweling spiders webs.
Crisp, clean, green air in the mornings.
Cosy nights by the fire with a good DVD and a bottle of wine.
The richness of the harvest - apples, pears, plums etc.,
The loamy scent of freshly turned earth.
Cons:-
Higher fuel bills.
Lovely thoughts there, Tabby.
Two more 'Cons' though - Halloween, when in some areas kids make a nuisance of themselves knocking on doors.
And Bonfire Night, when there is a huge public display right behind my house! Pretty to look at, but the bangs are sometimes horrendous.
