Hospital efficiency

Just over a month ago my OH had an appointment with a dermatologis re some little white spots that appeared on the tops of his ears. The dermatologist thought they were "sun damage" and decided to prescribe some cream to try for a month. The spots certainly went down but didn't go completely. Last Thursday the hospital rang to give us an appointment with the specialist again for Monday of this week. We went for the appointment and the specialist decided to operate, remove the spots and send them for analysis. This morning at 8.45 a.m. the hospital rang to see if it was convenient for my OH to be at the hospital for 1 p.m. for the surgery. We arrived and just a few minutes before 1 p.m. he was taken in, given local anesthetic and the spots removed by lazer. We were back home just after 1.30 p.m. The hospital is approximately 4 miles away.

The surgeon came out to explain to me what he had done and what my OH must do regarding cleaning the wound area and changing the dressing. A follow up appointment will be telephoned to us.

I call that excellent efficiency and good health care.

Err, sorry Aerolor, it's not your NHS, it's the Spanish version of the NHS, we live in Spain.

Re: Hospital efficiency

Still great service wherever it was Loretta. I've had some investigations and treatment lately with the NHS and I couldn't fault the service either...

Re: Hospital efficiency

Great service Loretta, good to know you have a good Spanish health service there.

I also had prompt treatment from the Dermatology department of our local hospital two years ago when they removed a suspicious mole from my arm. I have high regard for our NHS here.

I hope your OH's ear heals soon....

Re: Hospital efficiency

Thank you Mags and all, my OH's ear will be fine, he just looks comical with the dressing stuck over it. We are lucky here I think with the health service, we can almost always get an appointment with the doctor within a day, quite often the same day. When I managed to smash my arm and shoulder up in January we went direct to A&E which was literally heaving, but I was dealt with in less than 10 minutes. In fact everything happened so fast I wasn't given time to think

We come under the Torrevieja hospital which is now 4 years old and was, I believe, the world's first paperless hospital. It's certainly quite an amazing place, in our dealings with it there is nothing to complain about at all.

Re: Hospital efficiency

One of my neighbours who we used to live next door to were both retired and used to go to Spain to live every year through the British summer as they said it was cheaper than living over here and they raved about the health services.

Whilst they lived their Ken had a health problem and he told me that the health service and treatment you receive in Spain is excellent compared to our NHS. They not only resolved his problem they x rayed his entire body to rule any other problems out.

Re: Hospital efficiency

I can well believe it Kath and although at this present time of financial crisis and cutbacks the healthcare is still excellent. Our local clinic (surgery) has a paramedic on duty when the surgery itself is closed so you can go anytime during the night if you have a problem. If the problem is worse than you thought the paramedic will either send you direct to the hospital or arrange for an ambulance to take you. You can of course go direct to A&E but depending on what the problem is depends on how long your waiting time there is. They use a colour code system for dealing with people, red, you don't get time to check in, orange, check in and like me you may have a few minutes wait, etc etc. I think we are very lucky here where we live regarding health care, it's sort of "you will be fit whether you want to be or not"

Re: Hospital efficiency

I've heard some horror stories from folk of the treatment they've received over here in the UK, and I do think it depends on your area. At least, that's been my understanding of it.

On Friday I visited my doctor for something which has been concerning me for a few weeks but I hadn't been able to get an appointment. He took one look and told me to go IMMEDIATELY to A&E at our local infirmary. Like most of us, I'm not a fan of hospitals but, because of my doctor's reaction, it scared me into taking myself immediately there where I handed over the letter my GP had given me.

Now this was a Friday night, notoriously famous for busy A&Es but luckily I was early enough, and within 10 minutes I was seen by someone.

From that point at around 5.45 p.m. I was attended to really efficiently and was allowed to go home about two hours later, but now I have to have injections in my tummy every day for the next six weeks. Luckily for me, there's a clinic five minutes' drive from where I live as there's no way I could inject myself.

To me this is tip-top service and I can't fault it.
