The service was rubbish. I went interrailing in the 80s and was shocked at how fabulous french and german trains were compared to ours. Our rail system was a bit like the Italian model when it came to rolling stock. I remember coming back to the uk and we boarded a shabby dirty train at dover with those tartan seats grimy windows and soggy sandwiches. It was of course pouring down outside. So depressing after superb luxury all the way from the med.

Went inter-railing in Summer 1983 (£160 for a fortnight??). Agree about the trains. Even forked out for the occasional couchette.

Mystery why the UK had such terrible rolling stock in comparison.

I blame Thatcher. We went in 1987 and 1989.

Think you probably had the same sandwiches as me. They were fresh in 1983 but might have lost their rigidity by 1987

It could be that the terrible infrastructure simply couldn't cope with the newer stock that they had across the water. They both have to fit together to work. So outdated rails etc, means outdated rolling stock.

Re: Great british rail ??

It was because the money allocated for investment into rail and rolling stock went straight into employees pay packets. Like so much in the UK the trade unions were the poison.
