James Stewart for me in so many films absolutely wonderful actor.
Much as I loved James Stewart calling him a wonderful actor is stretching the truth a bit. I don't think he acted in any of his movies he just played James Stewart in all of them - it was just a very likeable character.
Most actors play themselves - they bring out their inner emotions to play a character. Most actors are chosen to 'fit the bill' ..... Jimmy did not suit a cowboy role, not for me anyway ....
He didn't play the role like everyone else he brought a sensitivity to it that others missed or couldn't do.
If anyone thinks some of the other cowboy actors were better actors they may need to look at what they were like in real life as Patsy said many actors play themselves in film really.
You're right and Jimmy was so suited to roles that required sensitivity.
In a 'Wonderful Life' - no one could fit that bill as well, he wrung out his emotions and drew you into the dilemmas he faced. No awareness of the camera, just locked into the plight of the character and how Jimmy would naturally react to it.
