Re: C.o.p.d

My son's MiL has it, she stopped smoking some years ago. Her doctor advised her to attend her local gym & I think prescribed the visits (not sure how that happens) she tells me she has improved greatly because of this. However she is only in her early seventies - much younger than your MiL.

Re: C.o.p.d

Mother in law is taking walks around the neighbourhood which is making her very cheerful as people are talking to her and she has the chance to tell all her stories to someone who hasn't heard them a million times.

She uses her puffer about four or five times each day and says she notices a big difference.

Sorry doctor but I can't get my head around you still smoking. There is a lot of help out there and if my mother in law can do it so can anyone she was a 20 perday person who had been smoking since she was 14.

When she was in her thirties she had to have a hysterectomy because she had cancer. She was in Christies Hospital in Manchester which was a big Cancer hospital in those days. Would you believe that her mother used to take her cigs into the ward where she was allowed to smoke in bed ashtrays were provided!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we know better and there is a lot of help to aid you to stop please give it another try.

Doc matey, I've been there too, used to be a 25 a day smoker. If I can help in anyway, you have but to ask - can give you encouragement and practical help to assist you finally kicking the habit altogether again.

Re: C.o.p.d

I quit cold turkey on January 15th this year, not because I wanted to but because I HAD to... my breathing was getting very bad. I miss it terribly every day and probably always will. I was a pack and a half a day smoker for years.

Re: C.o.p.d

It was the most difficult thing I ever did to give up the ciggies over two years ago. Smoked for 42 years, every time I went to the doctor short of breath and coughing I got told it was flu. One day I had to see another doctor and he immediately sent me off for lung tests and within a fortnight was diagnosed with COPD. Given Spiriva and Seretide inhalers and then the specialist at the hospital prescribed tablets to keep everything open. I even had to take heart meds and suffered from angina. Gave up the ciggies immediately, packed in my stressful job and today I have no heart problems, can run and keep up with the grandchildren, don't cough and my lung function has increased. If I'd carried on smoking I'd be worse now than I was two years ago. That fright of my life has kept and will keep me from ever lighting up again.

Re: C.o.p.d

Quitting smoking is all in the mind. Don't think of what you are missing but concentrate only on the positives and what you are gaining...my top ten reasons, which helped me kick the weed with very little effort finally, are:

1. I am free, and no longer a slave to tobacco and all that that entails.
2. I can breathe without that awful wheezing noise.
3. I can walk uphill without gasping for breath.
4. I smell better, and so does my clothing and my house and my car.
5. I can once again smell the flowers.
6. I can once again taste my food.
7. I am £70 a week better off.
8. I can enjoy the company of family and friends without having to slope off for a ciggy every half hour and missing the fun.
9. I will live longer, in better health, and with more vigour.
10. As I age I will not be such a burden on either my family or country.

Believing in the above truths allowed me to be free. It's the best thing that I have ever done for myself and my family. My life has been transformed and I rejoice every day that I made that choice...

All very true Barry, thanks for the reminders as I am taking all that for granted now.
