Re: My background...

Sue darlin' two previous exports from Hungary I loved but apparently can't get anymore - Egri Bikaver. There was also a white wine reputed to be very strong, (which it was) but which for the life of me I cannot recall the name of anymore.

Sue darlin' - been 'bugging' me all morning - the name of that Hungarian white wine - came to me a few minutes ago - Tokay - lovely stuff but now either unavailable or exceedingly expensive.

Yes, Tokay is very nice. The Egri Bikaver is known as Bull's Blood - bit strong for me. I used to like a white called Badacsonyi Szurkebarat too.

In Budapest they used Bull's blood (Egri Bikaver) as the sauce in a delicious Ghoulash!!! - I wanna go back there sometime.

I learned to make gulyásleves in my teens. Properly done, it takes hours.

Now there's something I've missed teaching my daughters... simply because it is so time consuming. I refuse to take short cuts with the family recipe! Egri Bikaver is perfect to sip with a big, hearty bowl of gulyás. (Pronounce it "gu-yash" with just a hint of the letter "L" after the "gu" and that's close.)

Re: My background...

You should meet my lovely neighbour Annie Jack, she is Hungarian but due to the problems in Hungary when she was young her family were moved to many places. They lived in the Dominican Republic, Austria, goodness knows where else but finally settled in Sweden. Rozalie has many photos of herself and her family from all those years ago, although now of course she is a Swedish citizen but she still speaks Hungarian and she has some amazing stories.
