There used to be a lucrative business in towns of collecting `night soil` for the dyeing and tanning factories. I`m not sure chemical alternatives are so much better TBH.

Yes, human urine was a vital ingredient in dyeing wasn't it? I heard on the radio just a couple of days ago that it was one of Newcastles greatest exports at one time. Mixed with alum, which was mined/quarried.
Guess the solids were used in the fields, to make the crops grow?

I had a friend that worked at a sewage works, he used to get all of his tomato plants from there, the pips go straight through apparently.

I prefer the more natural method to chemicals any day.
