Agapanthus

I fell in love with Agapanthus some years ago while on a trip to New Zealand where they are grown pretty much everywhere. I have grown them back home ever since but this year the three containers each with a different variety are going crazy! So many more than any previous year. I can only put it down to the very mild winter we had down south.

Re: Agapanthus

Interesting. I have inherited lots of agapanthus with this house but they haven't flowered well in the past three years. I think some need splitting, but there is so much that is more urgent to be done that I haven't got round to trying that.

Re: Agapanthus

Is agapanthus the Latin term? Does it have a common name?

Re: Agapanthus

I love these flowers. I split mine but it can put them back a year for flowering. I have now got 10 tubs full! Some have got nice big buds on just now, but I doubt the baby ones will flower this year. I have blues, whites, purple and a white one with blue inside the flowers. Luv 'em.

Re: Agapanthus

I see people can keep them as indoor plants & they're pretty easy to look after. I've never heard of them.

Re: Agapanthus

I bought two tubers in Funchal Flower Market about 10 years ago. I planted them in containers and they only produced one flower for years. A couple of years ago I transferred them into the ground and they are doing much better now, I can see 6 buds on them so far this year.

This photo was taken a couple of years ago:

Re: Agapanthus

Very pretty Mags, apparently they come in purple too?

Do you have to bring in the tubers in the fall?

Re: Agapanthus

I've seen blue agapanthus but not the purple ones, AC.

I leave mine in the ground all year round and tend to mulch then over for protection during the winter months.

Re: Agapanthus

Oh sorry I meant blue

Here with our cold winters I'd definitely have to dig it up just like for the first time I really want to try & save my Begonia, Dahlia bulbs , Gladiola corms & even try to keep my geraniums.

We have an unheated duck shed out back so I'm hoping I could store them in there
