Democracy - Is it still the right way to go?

We bring up the word "Democracy" fairly often, in our discussions, these days.

But should it still be the right policy, for us, in the UK, to maintain?

One concern would be that it's not impossible to see that a country can be taken over by invading it, not with soldiers, but with, say, strong religious controlling factions.

If those Religious controller incomers bar any form of population control, like contraception, etc., then they can, sooner or later, through the voting system, get power through any democratic election - and then remove the very Democratic option which got them there.

Thereby hangs my point. Democracy has vulnerability.

The EU already spotted that.

So, the point I suggest for discussion, is Democracy out of date?

Note: No need to remind us that we were not so democratic when we "discovered" countries, around the world, and took control. - Maybe we've learned, and moved on, from that?

Democracy isn't out of date, universal suffrage certainly is.

I'd never looked at democracy that way Ted, I shall ponder on it.

Democracy certainly has vulnerability of being destroyed by such "reasonable" arguments against its existence. That is why you have to fight to maintain it.

The reason that democracy has been globally pushed is because there is a theory that co-existing countries that are democratic do not go to war against each other. If you have a strong constitution (which we don't) it should not be open to the sort of weaknesses people complain of here.

Also moving further into disrepute as Politicians are rarely held responsible for delivering on their promises whilst the public, increasingly, is made aware of that by the media.

Further to that, the massive, openly public, handing of contributions to favoured Parties!

Look at the USA.

Are they making us feel warm & welcoming towards their use of elections?

Had to smile when Scottish born folk were excluded from the Scottish "Ref" , if they were resident elsewhere, whilst visiting folk were allowed.

Boris has "hinted" that all Scots might be allowed in any forthcoming Scot Votes!

There should not be a further referendum but should there be it should be UK wide and for a no-deal hard border physical separation complete with armed guards placed along it to keep the Scots out of England.

TOTAL independence. No foreign aid, no subsidies, nothing.

If it was then my guess is that there would be a overwhelming vote in favour of an independent Scotland based on how so many English people view "The Union" --- and the Scots.

Democracy? Doesn't the UK have to get an elected upper house before it becomes a democracy? Britain is so close but not quite there yet.

Not only that but some form of proportional representation must be introduced and all religious parties absolutely banned.
