After Covid.

Hi

A sober thought.

Lockdown as achieved a number of things.

Firstly, the children have not been mixing as normal and developing immunity to all sorts of things.

Now the adults.

The UK has not recorded one single Hospital Admission or case of Flu this winter, so no immunity developed in the population.

This coming Winter could be interesting.

Future events are always interesting Swimmy because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.

Re: After Covid.

If history is anything to go by Covid will replace flu as an annual event just as Asian Flu replaced Spanish Flu in 1958

Indeed:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56312621

The UK must prepare for a "hard winter" because the population immunity to respiratory viruses other than Covid could be lower than usual, one of England's top medics has warned.

Dr Susan Hopkins said the NHS must be "ready" for surges in flu and other similar illnesses.

Dr Hopkins, who is in charge of Public Health England's Covid strategy, said the UK needed to be "better prepared" than it was last autumn, when new, faster-spreading variants of the virus emerged.

Dr Hopkins told the BBC's The Andrew Marr Show:

"I think we have to prepare for a hard winter, not only with coronavirus, but we've had a year of almost no respiratory viruses of any other type. And that means, potentially the population immunity to that is less. So we could see surges in flu. We could see surges in other respiratory viruses and other respiratory pathogens."

Re: After Covid.

Interesting what she calls "other respiratory pathogens"....she already mentioned virus, so I wonder what she means by that

Re: After Covid.

So getting everyone vaccinated has sorted out one problem only to create another....Anyway, I thought the flu vaccine was supposed to prevent flu? We should let nature take its course because it will eventually anyway...

Flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc.

I read in yesterday's newspaper that the take up of MMR jabs has fallen over this last year so I expect we can see an increase in the number of ankle-snappers contracting measles, etc in the near future.

Re: After Covid.

The flu will be back. The protein capsids that surround the virion and protect their DNA or RNA make them not very susceptible to freezing, heat, drying out, etc. They are out there lurking ready to get back to replication.

The biggest problem next year will be which flu shot to use? Each year, data on previous strains, susceptibility, and geographic spread are used to formulate the next year's season.

With so much reduced incidence, we could see a higher incidence of flu if virologists make the wrong guess.

It's a virological roll of the dice.
