Medication for arthritis.

My husband Tony suffers badly with arthritis in his knee. He's taking 2 x 500 mgs of Paracetamol plus 1 x 15mg of codeine phosphate 4 time a day. They don't seem to be helping much - he still can't get to sleep for the pain.

I wondered if any of our forum members had arthritis and what medication do you take for it and does it help?

Have a look at these Carol - I think you need external help too, so one of these is worth a try - link below

Re: Medication for arthritis.

Hi Carole I know heat can be very helpful with pain so a heat pack wrapped around the knee..

In general, a new injury will cause inflammation and possibly swelling. Ice will decrease the blood flow to the injury, thereby decreasing inflammation and swelling. Pain that recurs can be treated with heat, which will bring blood to the area and promote healing.

In bed using a pillow under the knee may help once it is in a comfortable position.

I don't know whether it would help but my husband has it in his fingers and finds a magnetic bracelet helps. Don't understand the science of it but it's amazing.

Re: Medication for arthritis.

Hi Carole, that's a lot of Paracetemol.
I don't have the arthritis but my S in L does.
She went to the Doctors and seemingly there might be
a new relief for this problem on the knees.
I don't know all the ins and outs but they give you injections
in the knee where the worse arthritis is. They have to do
a MIR scan on your knees.
Problem is, the NHS or the one near to my Brothers hospital
wont pay for it doing. You can however, go private and it
costs about £1200. My Brother said that you cant take it
with you so wanted my S in L to be able to get her knees
back in shape and they are at present into waiting for the MIR
scan to start the treatment.
One thing I do remember from the past was a lot of arthritis
is caused by eating too much white flour. Don't know whether
that was ever proven to be true.
Hope this helps.

Thanks - he's had the 'injection' and tried all the miracle supplements - health foods etc - even had a magnetic bracelet at one time... Nothing helped.
I really just want to know what prescribed medication other people take and does it help?

He could take more codeine at night.
Has he considered acupuncture? There is some evidence that it works well for arthritic knees.

Re: Medication for arthritis.

Hi Carol,I'm afraid there is no medication which will take the pain of osteo arthritis away completely, sounds like a knee replacement is badly needed,..I had one in My left knee, but the other needs done now too...I just take paracetemol if the pain keeps Me awake at night, and massage volterol on, but exercise is vital to keep the muscles surrounding the joint strong and it does help.

Re: Medication for arthritis.

Yes - he's had a knee replacement 2 years ago but it wasn't very successful ... It's this new knee that pains him the most - especially at night time though he admits he can walk a little better... He also has it in the other knee but refuses to have another replacement due to the pain he's experiencing with his 'new' one.

It seems like there's no hope really - just thought I'd ask.
