Co-open common sense

East of England Co-op will become the first major retailer to sell food beyond its "best before" dates.

Food with use-by dates Products which will be reduced to 10p include Rice Pasta Confectionary Cereal Crisps Couscous Biscuits. Roger Grosvenor, joint chief executive of East of England Co-op, told trade magazine The Grocer many of the 10p items sold within hours of being reduced during the scheme’s trial period. The scheme was trialled across 14 stores for three months. “By selling perfectly edible food we can save 50,000 plus items every year that would otherwise have gone to waste,” he said.

Re: Co-open common sense

Don't all supermarkets have a reduced price area in their shops for goods? Or are those just foods which are almost past their expiry date?

Yes they do reduce them but have limited choice, usually half price.

This scheme everything is 10p.

Re: Co-open common sense

I know my wife will be down to Co-op like a shot hearing this news, whether we need anything or not. Ergo, it will be me who ends up seeing dozens of Post-It notes on items in the fridge a day later saying "Needs using up".
So it will be packed lunches full of pieces of cheese, pork pies, almost stake bread and bottles of Frijj milkshakes!

Dairy products always dodgy, take care. Stale bread makes a good bread pudding.

As a person pops into morrisons for their reduced price bakery stuff I predict this will be very popular, seen people fight over things in the past

Re: Co-open common sense

Cinder's your article there is a year old, Dec 2017 !

Just about all supermarkets have since provided such foodstuffs to charity organisations, in particular the FareShare organisation.

The support centres I have worked in often rely on such food donations. The street people don't care if things are a little out of date, it's the least of their problems.

What I have often found though is that the selection of "past date" foods is very limited.

Bottom line is the supermarkets want people to pay full whack for their products. It's not really in their interests to have any major level of cheap products because people will simply adapt and wait for those cheap foods to be put on display rather than buy the real thing.

That's why the "past date" or "nearly past date" bargains are just a tiny tiny area of the supermarket. A couple of shelves usually.

Food wastage is still enormous and the issues are not straight forward.

Here's the Fareshare link if you're interested:

There was an update on local news today can't remember if reporter said 250 or 250,000 tonnes of food had not gone to waste. Hope more supermarkets consider this.

Re: Co-open common sense

They already do Cinders as I said earier.

The Fareshare scheme for example get support from all of these retailers:

plus many more

One of the problems with saving "past date" or "nearly past date" food for people and charities is the categorisation of the foods.

All the dry foods like rice and pasta and tins etc are classed as "Ambient" foods. They are safe foods.

Charities like Fareshare will only pass on Ambient goods to support centres and charities UNLESS and only unless they can prove that they have adequate cooking facilities with properly assessed hygiene standard and catering staff/volunteers who have adequate training in the preparation and storage of goods. If they have all of the latter, then they can have all the perishable goods like meats and dairy products and so on.
