Seriously, it's probably old fashioned poaching, not some sort of ancient ritual.
I don't think for a moment it was anything to do with ancient rituals dOOd, it is just plain thieving and then either sharing or flogging the meat.

The local Farmers including us had a spell of sheep vanishing, it was a while ago now but my OH had the sheep all moved to the fields either side of the horses, they can't be seen from the road there. The horses are excellent watch dogs too,
they start shouting the odds and trotting about if they hear anything out of the norm. We always know if there's anyone around as they are very close to the house.
