Have any of you seen this?

and, if so, what do you think about it? Too good to be true - or what?

TotalAV Free Essential Antivirus

This review says that the product does not live up to its' claims unless you pay extra for additional protection:

https://uk.pcmag.com/software/118286...tial-antivirus

PROS

Well-designed user interface. Speedy scan. Good phishing protection score. Free.

CONS

Lacks necessary real-time malware protection. Dismal malware protection and malicious URL blocking scores. Flagged valid utilities as malware. No results from independent labs.

BOTTOM LINE

TotalAV Free Essential Antivirus scans for malware quickly, but it lacks any form of real-time protection. It's bursting with bonus features that you can't use without paying. Give this one a miss.

Re: Have any of you seen this?

Plenty of interesting reviews on TrustPilot too

Summary:

It's just another wannabe antivirus company that wants a bite of the AV cherry in an already saturated market imho. The business model is always the same. They start by giving it for free to establish a customer base, then things change.

With so many well established AV companies out there that have been doing it for years why would you go for a new less experienced one? Can only result in you leaving yourself vulnerable imho.

Plenty of free AV systems out there. Try Comodo.

Re: Have any of you seen this?

It's not exactly new nor revolutionary. Mentions of it go back to March 2017. It's not unusual to read enthusiastic reviews of security products but a few articles have to be read to get a true balance of opinion.

I'd see it as yet another program amongst the many that some will praise and others won't.

A long review here (dated November 2017). You can always skip to the verdict and comments at the end. People don't seem very happy:

This incredible new security device has hit Australia and it's going viral already. Here’s why so many computer owners are rushing to get theirs today.

It's a bit like the 'Film everyone is talking about' - no one has actually heard of it until now.

Re: Have any of you seen this?

Total AV claims to be a revolutionary breakthrough in the article linked to in the OP but it doesn't seem it is. However, I read it uses Avira's AV engine, so is probably good enough at malware detection. Avira itself is a reputable program that does well in detection rates according to tests.

It's not uncommon for an AV program to use detection engines developed by other companies. Avira and Bitdefender engines are quite often used by others.

As said though, it is just another program competing in the security program field. Also, anyone deciding to try it would need to look into how it sits on the Windows system, how it operates and how free the program actually is.

Security programs can improve as time goes by. I don't know if this one is now better than when the review linked to below was written.
