Re: What is happening to our country with all this violent crime?

I think what has changed is the lack of a police presence on the streets and, even if you are arrested and convicted, you will only serve a fraction of that time in jail.

The only way our streets will be safe again will be when we have zero tolerance on the streets and tougher sentencing in the courts.

There is no respect any more. You can do anything these days and get away with it.
Life is cheap.

There are a large number of people, a sort of underclass who have no prospects and feel they have no future. It's hard enough if you have a perfect upbringing. So this group has its own rules, culture and as Art said, life is cheap to them. They don't see the point of bothering with a society that doesn't care. Crime and violence are far more appealing and fit into their online gaming mentality.

Perhaps they should ban violent online games? I guess that's impossible though.

They say a lot of the charities that used to keep these people occupied and off the streets have been shut down due to lack of funding since the tories came to power. So there's no safety net.

They start off playing online games and end up on the street acting it out for real. What's real and what's a game becomes blurred.

Re: What is happening to our country with all this violent crime?

I have only just heard that an 18 year old was stabbed to death in Brixton this afternoon allegedly because he had not settled a debt of £10. The attacker was 17 years old.

I cannot even begin to understand how a child grows up to have this sort of mindset.

I've no idea of the names of the charity organisations Muddy. They fall under the broad umbrella of "youth services" which were funded by local authorities and were traditionally provided by the third sector. Since councils have had the budgets substantially squeezed they have had to make decisions to decommission what they see as unnecessary. it's not just youth services, but mental health and social care day centres that filled an important gap in the mainstream services. They patched up the cracks. Now it's all creaking at the seams.

"Since the 2011-12 financial year, cuts have removed 46 per cent of funding from London council youth services
Youth centres have closed across the city, with 104 centres and projects shutting their doors
Youth worker jobs have declined by 562. "

"Rising knife crime could be linked to budget cuts that have decimated youth services in parts of England, according to a parliamentary report.

The average council has reduced spending on services such as social clubs and youth workers by 40 per cent, and some places have seen funding plummet by 91 per cent in three years."
