Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

We've done our health directive. Basically no heroic measures, donate any useable organs, cremate me and throw me around the nature reserve, ashes to ashes. But yeah filling out that paper work was sobering stuff.

Nothing of great value, just donate my books to my favorite library. Sophie will probably spontaneously combust if something happens to me. Mostly I just want to know someone will take care of my doggie boy.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

We made our will 25 years ago and we won't change it again.
If you donate your body to medical science they come and examine your body and they can refuse it as unsuitable.
We have even bought the grave site, I even marked out the spot a double plot for my wife and I and one for my 2 daughters.
Where you see the pegs are to graves.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

Looks good Mups.

I have a free copy of the Life Book from Age Uk, that has sections for last wishes, funeral plans, property and stuff owned. However, for my own needs, it's not big enough, so that is why I am composing my own document to go with it.

The LB has sections for wills, PA, living will, location, utilities, insurance policies, organisations to contact. It is still an excellent little booklet in its own right, and totally free.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

I made a will a while back but want to change it.
Iknow it needs to be sorted out sensibly, but I still find it quite scary.

I want to live. I find it hard to think about choosing flowers/music/etc for my funeral. I struggle to get into that mind set.
As long as my dogs are safe, I'm not as anxious about other things as I perhaps should be.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

I agree Mups, about wanting to live, but I suppose once it's done, it's a weight off the mind.

Mum had done her funeral plan, was cremated, and the ashes put with Dad. Fine. But we had no clue of her actual ceremony wishes, and my sisters chose the music (Doris Day and Freddie Mercury, and we all agreed on Andrea Bocelli).

Would my family know what to do with me? Not really.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

I just seriously worry about my dog. Hubby isn't strong enough to deal with him anymore. We have friends with pups of their own. It's just that he looks really intimidating...actually he's an easygoing lap dog. I'd feel better if somebody could reassure me that if something happens they would definitely take him.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

I can understand that Opheila.
Is he a certain breed? The reason I ask is because over here, we have some 'breed specific' rescues. They are people who understand and specialise in a particular breed and their needs.
You could maybe have a chat with them in advance to suss them out and see how you feel even.
Do you have these type of rescues where you are?

Just thought it might be worth bearing in mind if no one in the family wanted him or could cope with him in the way you wish?

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

Thank you I was thinking of that. There are several groups locally that are breed specific. Ideally I'd like to get some names and addresses and meet some people who could be possible Godparents if something happened to me. Callie is a young guy, probably about four years old. He's an American Bull Dog. Fortunate we don't have breed bans here. Like I said though even though he's easygoing with other dogs, cats, and a total ladie's man with humans people still fear him sometimes.

One of the sillier stories-One night we were walking past a bus stop. Callie was just walking along wagging his tail and smelling the breeze. As we got to the bus stop there were three young men...standing on the bench looking down at Callie. He glanced at them and then marched ahead on his merry way. They didn't get off that bench until we were blocks away.

One organisation stated taking 1-4% of the estate.

I've just made a list, firstly of how I would like the Will wording to be (or have made a start), and I've also started a list of people and organisations who need to be contacted. Crikey, what a list! It just goes on and on.
I live in Canada and my husband and I went to our lawyer to draw up our will about five years ago. We found this very helpful as it seemed to take the lead on organizing our assets, etc. As well we made a point to do a medical directive, which many hospitals here require.

Re: Starting to think seriously about my Will etc.

Made my will 2 years ago , but since then I've changed my surname back to my maiden name , I haven't contacted the solicitors to change it as they will charge me , so I've put an original deed poll change of name in it and the kids can sort it out when I've left the planet .

What does surprise me is those of you who have mentioned your children who don't bother to contact you or stay in touch , how can children do this to their parents .
